Everything you need to know about at-home STI testing

At-home STI testing has become an increasingly important option for Australians who want the convenience and privacy of testing from home. The Clinic365 at-home STI test kit uses the same PCR technology and accredited pathology laboratories as clinic-based testing, ensuring results are equally accurate and reliable. The kit is designed for self-collection of chlamydia and gonorrhoea samples using vaginal, throat, or rectal swabs depending on your sexual history. At Home Sti Test Australia is available through Clinic365.

Your $79 includes a telehealth consultation with a Specialist GP before your kit is sent. During this call, your GP discusses which swabs are appropriate for you based on your sexual practices, advises on the collection process, and answers any questions. Once discussed, your kit is express posted same day in discreet, unmarked packaging. Inside you will find the collection swabs, labelled tubes, step-by-step instructions, and a prepaid express post satchel for returning your samples. You can also drop your samples at any pathology lab Australia-wide instead of posting.

Self-collection is straightforward and takes under five minutes. Vaginal swabs are inserted like a tampon and rotated against the vaginal walls. Throat swabs are rubbed across the back of the throat and tonsils. Rectal swabs are inserted approximately two to three centimetres into the anal canal. Detailed instructions with diagrams are included in every kit. The swabs are then placed in the provided tubes and sealed.

Once collected, you have two return options. You can place the samples in the reply-paid envelope and drop it in any Australia Post mailbox — express postage is included. Alternatively, you can drop the samples directly at any participating pathology laboratory for faster processing. Results are typically available within three to five business days and are sent to you by SMS.

It is important to understand that at-home swab kits test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea only. They do not include blood tests for syphilis, HIV, or hepatitis, as these require a venous blood sample collected at a pathology clinic. If you want a comprehensive screen including blood-borne infections, the $39 online STI screen with a pathology clinic visit is recommended. Your Specialist GP can advise on the most appropriate testing option for your situation during your included telehealth consultation.

At-home testing is ideal for people who prefer the privacy and convenience of collecting their sample at home rather than attending a clinic or pathology centre. All kits use the same laboratory-grade testing methods as clinic-based samples, so there is no compromise on accuracy or reliability. Your kit arrives in plain, discreet packaging with no indication of the contents — nobody will know what is inside. Free express postage is included both ways.

After your sample is received at the laboratory, results are typically available within two to five business days and are sent to you by SMS. If your results are positive or abnormal, a Specialist GP will contact you directly to discuss next steps, arrange treatment, and answer any questions. You do not need to chase results or make a separate appointment — the follow-up is built into the service. If your results are negative, you will receive a text message confirming this, with no further action needed.
