Everything you need to know about IUD insertion

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are one of the most effective forms of contraception available, with a failure rate of less than 1 per cent. Two main types are available in Australia: hormonal IUDs which release a progestogen hormone and last 5–8 years, and copper IUDs which are hormone-free and last up to 10 years. Iud Insertion Melbourne is available by telehealth from our Specialist GP.

At Clinic365, IUD insertion follows a two-step process. First, you book a telehealth consultation ($59) with a Specialist GP. During this call, your doctor will discuss which IUD type is most suitable for you, review your medical history, arrange any pre-insertion testing (such as STI screening or pregnancy testing), and provide advice on what to expect during the procedure. This ensures you are fully informed and prepared.

The in-person IUD insertion appointment ($499) takes place at our East Melbourne clinic. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes. Your Specialist GP will perform the insertion using a sterile technique. Most patients experience mild to moderate cramping during insertion, which usually settles within a few minutes. Paracetamol or ibuprofen taken beforehand can help with discomfort.

A follow-up check is recommended at approximately 6 weeks after insertion to confirm correct positioning. This can be done via telehealth or in person. After the initial settling-in period, most patients find their IUD requires no ongoing maintenance — it simply works in the background for years.

IUDs are suitable for most people, including those who have not previously been pregnant. They can be removed at any time if you wish to become pregnant or switch to a different method. Fertility returns almost immediately after removal. Your Specialist GP will discuss all of this during your initial telehealth consultation.

Our East Melbourne clinic is located at Suite 6c, Level 5, 182–184 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne VIC 3002. The clinic is easily accessible by public transport — tram routes 48 and 75 stop nearby, and Parliament Station is a short walk. Street parking and nearby parking stations are available for those driving. The clinic environment is designed to be comfortable, private, and non-judgemental. All consultations are conducted in private rooms by experienced Specialist GPs.

In-person consultations allow for a comprehensive assessment that may include physical examination, on-the-spot testing, same-day treatment, and procedures such as cryotherapy, vaccination, or device insertion depending on the service. Many patients choose to combine multiple services in a single visit — for example, an STI screen combined with contraception review, or a cervical screening test alongside an HPV vaccination. Your GP will discuss all available options during your consultation and tailor the appointment to your specific needs and concerns.

Clinic365 is committed to providing inclusive, non-judgemental care. Our clinic welcomes patients of all genders, sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds. We understand that sexual health can be a sensitive topic, and our team is trained to create a safe and supportive environment for every patient. All consultations are completely confidential — we do not share information with your regular GP, employer, or insurer without your explicit consent. Whether you are seeking routine screening, treatment for a specific concern, or preventive care, our Specialist GPs are here to help.
