Everything you need to know about at-home semen analysis

The at-home semen analysis kit allows you to collect your semen sample in the comfort and privacy of your own home, avoiding the awkwardness of collecting at a pathology clinic or fertility centre. The kit is posted to your door in discreet packaging and includes a sterile specimen container, detailed collection instructions, and information about your nearest participating pathology drop-off locations. At Home Sperm Test is available through Clinic365.

The key requirement for at-home collection is that your sample must reach a participating pathology laboratory within 45 minutes of collection, maintained at body temperature. This means you need to live or stay within reasonable travel distance of a drop-off location. Keep the sample close to your body during transport — an inside pocket works well. Your Specialist GP will discuss logistics during your included telehealth consultation.

Preparation is straightforward. Abstain from ejaculation for two to five days before collection — not less than two and not more than seven. Avoid alcohol, recreational drugs, and excessive heat exposure such as saunas and hot baths for 72 hours before collection. These factors can temporarily affect sperm parameters and may produce inaccurate results if not controlled.

The laboratory performs a comprehensive WHO-standard semen analysis measuring sperm count, concentration, motility, morphology, volume, pH, and liquefaction time. Results are compared against World Health Organisation reference values. Your Specialist GP reviews the results and contacts you to discuss them — this follow-up is included in the $79 price.

If results are abnormal on a single test, a repeat analysis is recommended two to four weeks later because sperm quality naturally varies between ejaculates due to factors like stress, illness, and recent heat exposure. If results are consistently abnormal, your GP may recommend hormonal blood tests, lifestyle modifications, or referral to a fertility specialist for further investigation and management options.

At-home testing is ideal for people who prefer the privacy and convenience of collecting their sample at home rather than attending a clinic or pathology centre. All kits use the same laboratory-grade testing methods as clinic-based samples, so there is no compromise on accuracy or reliability. Your kit arrives in plain, discreet packaging with no indication of the contents — nobody will know what is inside. Free express postage is included both ways.

After your sample is received at the laboratory, results are typically available within two to five business days and are sent to you by SMS. If your results are positive or abnormal, a Specialist GP will contact you directly to discuss next steps, arrange treatment, and answer any questions. You do not need to chase results or make a separate appointment — the follow-up is built into the service. If your results are negative, you will receive a text message confirming this, with no further action needed.

The at-home collection process is straightforward and designed to be completed in just a few minutes. Each kit includes clear, step-by-step instructions, the required collection materials, a prepaid return envelope, and a pathology referral from your Specialist GP. If you have any questions about the collection process, your GP is available to assist by phone. At-home kits are available for STI screening, herpes testing, cervical screening, and semen analysis — covering the most commonly requested sexual health tests.
