Herpes simplex virus cannot be cured, but it is one of the most manageable conditions in sexual health medicine. Antiviral medications — primarily antiviral medications — are highly effective at reducing the severity and duration of outbreaks, decreasing the frequency of recurrences, and significantly lowering the risk of transmitting the virus to sexual partners. According to the Australian STI Management Guidelines, treatment should be offered to all patients with symptomatic herpes and discussed as an option for suppressive therapy.

For a first episode of genital herpes, the recommended treatment is antiviral medication twice daily for five to ten days, started as soon as possible after symptoms appear. First episodes are typically the most severe, with painful blisters or ulcers that may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Early treatment can significantly reduce the duration and severity of this initial outbreak.

For recurrent episodes, the same medication at the same dose is taken for three to five days. Many people learn to recognise early warning signs — tingling, itching, or burning — before blisters appear, and starting treatment at this prodromal stage can prevent the outbreak from developing fully or shorten it significantly. Over time, recurrent outbreaks tend to become less frequent and less severe for most people.

Daily suppressive therapy is recommended for people who experience six or more outbreaks per year, or for those who want to reduce the risk of transmitting herpes to a sexual partner. The standard suppressive dose is antiviral medication once daily, taken continuously. Studies show that suppressive therapy reduces outbreak frequency by approximately 80 per cent and halves the risk of sexual transmission to a partner.

The emotional impact of a herpes diagnosis can be significant, but it is important to understand that herpes is extremely common and highly manageable. With proper treatment, most people experience few or no outbreaks after the first year. Clinic365 offers ongoing herpes medication refills for $39 online — no appointment needed — making long-term management simple and affordable.

All treatment consultations at Clinic365 are conducted by Specialist GPs with extensive experience in sexual health medicine. During your telehealth consultation, your GP will review your test results, confirm the diagnosis, explain the treatment plan, and answer any questions you have. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy and can usually be collected the same day. Your GP will also discuss partner notification, safe sex practices during treatment, and when to resume sexual activity.

Follow-up care is an important part of treatment. Depending on the infection, your GP may recommend a test of clearance after completing treatment to confirm the infection has resolved, as well as a repeat screen at three months to check for reinfection. Both follow-up tests can be ordered through Clinic365 for $39 online. If symptoms persist or recur after treatment, your GP is available for reassessment by telehealth. Early detection and prompt treatment remain the most effective way to protect your sexual health and prevent complications.
