The contraceptive implant (the contraceptive implant) is a small, flexible rod approximately four centimetres long that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a low dose of the hormone etonogestrel continuously for up to three years, making it one of the most effective and convenient forms of contraception available — with an efficacy rate above 99 per cent. Once inserted, no daily action is required. Contraceptive Implant Melbourne is available by telehealth from our Specialist GP.
Insertion is a minor procedure performed at our East Melbourne clinic under local anaesthetic. The area is numbed with a small injection, and the implant is placed just under the skin using a pre-loaded applicator. The entire procedure takes under five minutes. A small bandage is applied and should be kept on for 24 hours. Bruising at the insertion site is common and resolves within one to two weeks.
The most common side effect of the implant is changes to menstrual bleeding patterns. Approximately 20 per cent of women experience no periods, 30 per cent have lighter periods, and some experience irregular or prolonged bleeding, particularly in the first six to twelve months. Your Specialist GP will discuss these patterns and management options during your consultation. Other possible side effects include headache, mood changes, and acne, though most women tolerate the implant well.
Removal is straightforward and takes three to five minutes under local anaesthetic. A small incision is made over the end of the implant, which is then gently pulled out. Fertility returns immediately after removal — there is no delay in returning to normal fertility. A new implant can be inserted immediately at the same appointment if continued contraception is desired.
The consultation fee is $149 and covers the appointment, insertion, and post-insertion care. The implant device (the contraceptive implant) is PBS-eligible and costs approximately $7 with a concession card or $40 without. Your GP will discuss all costs, benefits, and potential side effects during the consultation to ensure the implant is the right choice for you.

In-person consultations allow for a comprehensive assessment that may include physical examination, on-the-spot testing, same-day treatment, and procedures such as cryotherapy, vaccination, or device insertion depending on the service. Many patients choose to combine multiple services in a single visit — for example, an STI screen combined with contraception review, or a cervical screening test alongside an HPV vaccination. Your GP will discuss all available options during your consultation and tailor the appointment to your specific needs and concerns.
