Everything you need to know about semen analysis in Melbourne

Clinic365 offers semen analysis consultations by telehealth with a Specialist GP. During your phone consultation, your GP will discuss your fertility concerns, provide a pathology referral, and give you detailed preparation and collection instructions. You will attend a nearby Melbourne pathology laboratory for sample collection. The closest options are Melbourne Pathology East Melbourne (124 Grey Street — on-site collection room, 5 minutes from our clinic) and Melbourne Pathology Collingwood Lab (103 Victoria Parade — drop-off only, deliver within 45 minutes of collection). Semen Analysis Melbourne is available by telehealth from our Specialist GP.

The analysis follows World Health Organisation standards, measuring sperm count, concentration, motility, morphology, volume, pH, and liquefaction time. Results are compared against WHO reference values to assess fertility potential. Your Specialist GP reviews the results in detail and discusses the findings with you — this follow-up is included in the $149 consultation fee.

Preparation for your appointment follows standard guidelines. Abstain from ejaculation for two to five days before your appointment — not less than two and not more than seven. Avoid alcohol, recreational drugs, and excessive heat exposure for 72 hours before collection. Your GP will discuss any medications that may need to be paused and answer any questions about the process during your consultation.

If results are abnormal on a single test, a repeat analysis is recommended two to four weeks later. Sperm quality naturally varies between ejaculates due to factors such as stress, illness, sleep, and temperature. Consistently abnormal results may prompt your GP to recommend hormonal blood tests, lifestyle modifications, or referral to a fertility specialist for further investigation.

If you are not in Melbourne, Clinic365 offers an online sperm test referral for $39 — collect at home or at a collection centre and drop off at any participating pathology lab. An at-home sperm test kit ($79) is also available, posted to your door with everything you need. All options use the same WHO-standard laboratory analysis.

Semen analysis is the single most important test in assessing male fertility. It provides objective data on sperm count, concentration, motility (movement), morphology (shape), volume, pH, and liquefaction time. These parameters are compared against World Health Organisation (WHO) reference values to determine whether the sample falls within the expected range for fertile men. It is important to understand that a single abnormal result does not necessarily indicate infertility — sperm quality naturally varies between ejaculates due to factors such as recent illness, stress, sleep, alcohol, medications, and temperature exposure.

If your initial results are abnormal, your Specialist GP will typically recommend a repeat analysis two to four weeks later under optimal conditions. Consistently abnormal results may prompt further investigation including hormonal blood tests (testosterone, FSH, LH), scrotal ultrasound, or referral to a fertility specialist or urologist. Lifestyle modifications — including maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking, managing stress, and avoiding excessive heat exposure — can improve sperm parameters in many cases. Your GP will discuss all options and develop a plan tailored to your specific situation.
