Sperm Test (Semen Analysis)

The sample must reach the lab within 40 minutes of collection. Sperm die quickly outside the body, so a late sample is unusable and the test has to be repeated. At-home collection only works if you live within about 20–25 minutes of a participating lab. If you are further away, use the lab’s on-site collection room instead.

You get a referral, not a kit in the post. The $59 covers a Specialist GP phone consult plus the pathology referral and instructions you take to the lab. After the call, we email you the referral form and collection instructions to print, and you phone the lab to book your drop-off slot.

Two reasons people get tested. A fertility test checks sperm count, movement (motility), and shape (morphology), usually as part of looking into how long conception is taking. A post-vasectomy test (PVSA) checks that no sperm remain after a vasectomy, before you rely on it for contraception. The collection method is the same for both; what differs is the timing and the abstinence rules — the Specialist GP confirms which applies to you on the call.

Why you need a referral first. Australian labs don’t do walk-in sperm tests — they need a GP referral, and the sample has to be booked so the lab is ready to test it the moment it arrives. The Specialist GP also checks the test is the right one for you.

Before you collect. For a fertility test, no ejaculation for 2 to 7 days beforehand — too short or too long a gap can skew the count. A post-vasectomy test has no abstinence rule. For either, avoid recent illness, saunas, hot baths, or heavy alcohol in the days beforehand, as these can temporarily affect sperm production and give a misleading result.

How to collect. Wash your hands and penis with soap and rinse well. Collect the whole sample straight into the sterile container — no condoms, no lubricant, no saliva. Seal the lid, and label it with your name, date of birth, and the exact collection time.

Getting it to the lab. Carry the container close to your body to keep it warm — don’t refrigerate it or leave it anywhere hot or cold. Get it to the lab within 40 minutes.

When at-home collection isn’t right for you. If you live more than 30 minutes from a lab, are in a regional or rural area, or had a previous sample rejected, the lab’s on-site collection room is the better choice. Most major fertility labs have private rooms you can use. Find a collection centre near you →

Frequently asked questions

You book a $59 Specialist GP phone consult. The Specialist GP takes a brief history, then we email you the lab’s referral form and collection instructions to print. You phone the lab to book your drop-off slot, and they tell you when to pick up a sterile container. You collect at home and deliver the sample within 40 minutes. There is no kit posted by Clinic365.
No. Australian pathology labs don’t do walk-in sperm testing. They need a referral with the right boxes ticked (fertility vs post-vasectomy, abstinence period, what to test for, your full details). Without it, the lab will not accept your sample. The Specialist GP consult arranges the referral and confirms you’re getting the right test for your situation.
Sperm die quickly outside the body. Motility — one of the key parameters measured — drops measurably within 40 minutes of collection. Beyond that window, the result may not be reliable, and the lab may flag it or reject the sample. The 40 minutes includes time to leave home, transit, parking, and lab reception.
A fertility test checks sperm count, movement, shape, and amount — usually when a couple is trying for a baby. It needs a strict 2–7 day abstinence period before collection. A post-vasectomy test (PVSA) checks that the vasectomy worked — you have to wait at least 12 weeks and 20 ejaculations after the procedure before your first test, and no abstinence rule applies. The collection method is the same; only the timing and abstinence rules differ.
The lab’s on-site collection room is the better option if you live more than 30 minutes from a participating lab, if you’re in regional or rural Australia, if a previous at-home sample was rejected, or if motility accuracy is critical for your fertility treatment plan. Most major fertility-focused labs have private collection rooms you can book.
Fertility test: no sex (no intercourse, no masturbation) for 2–7 days before collection. Post-vasectomy: no abstinence rule. Avoid recent illness — sperm production is sensitive to fever, so wait 3 months after a febrile illness. Avoid recent saunas, hot baths, or heavy alcohol in the days before. Continue your usual treatments unless the Specialist GP advises otherwise.
Wash your hands and penis with soap, rinse thoroughly so all soap is gone (soap kills sperm). Collect by masturbation, directly into the sterile container the lab gave you. No condoms, no lubricants, no saliva. Catch the whole ejaculate — including the first squirt, which has most of the sperm. Screw the lid on tight. Label with your full name, date of birth, and the exact time of collection.
Body temperature is the target. Carry the container in an inside shirt or pants pocket against your body. Don’t refrigerate it. Don’t leave it in a hot or cold car. Drive straight to the lab.
$59 covers the Specialist GP phone consult, the email with your referral form and instructions, and a follow-up call to discuss results when they come back. Lab pathology fees are paid to the lab directly — fertility semen analysis is generally not covered by Medicare, and out-of-pocket fees vary by provider. Confirm with the lab when you book your drop-off slot.
Most labs return results to the referring GP within 1–5 working days of analysing the sample. The Specialist GP reviews them and contacts you to discuss what they mean for your situation. For below-reference-range results, the Specialist GP works through next steps — potentially a repeat sample, hormone testing, or referral to a urologist or fertility specialist.
