In-clinic insertion — your IUD fitted, unhurried, 7 days a week
An IUD is one of the most effective and convenient forms of contraception available — but getting one fitted can feel like a hassle to organise. Our East Melbourne clinic makes it simple: IUD insertion, removal and replacement seven days a week, with experienced clinicians who take the time to do it properly and put you at ease. Whether you’re choosing an IUD for the first time, replacing an existing one, or having one removed, you can book a time that suits you — weekdays or weekends.
It starts with a free, bulk-billed telehealth assessment: a Specialist GP talks through your situation, confirms an IUD is right for you, and helps you choose between hormonal and copper — all before you set foot in the clinic. The fitting itself is then done in person, unhurried, at our comfortable East Melbourne rooms.
What we offer
IUD insertion — fitting a new hormonal or copper IUD.
IUD removal — quick, straightforward removal when you want one out or it’s due.
IUD replacement — removing an expiring IUD and fitting a new one, usually in the same appointment.
Checks and advice — thread checks, help if you’re having problems, and unhurried guidance on which IUD suits you.
Both types — hormonal and copper IUDs, and help choosing between them.
Open 7 days matters for emergency contraception. A copper IUD is the most effective emergency contraception when fitted within five days of unprotected sex — and those five days don’t pause for weekends. Being open every day means this option is actually available when you need it. If you’re considering it, contact us as early as you can within that window.
⚖️ Your Options
Hormonal vs Copper IUDs
An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s long-acting reversible contraception — it works for years once fitted, yet can be removed at any time, with fertility returning quickly afterwards. IUDs are more than 99% effective, and once one is in place there’s nothing to remember day to day. Both types are highly effective; the right choice comes down to how they differ and what suits you:
Hormonal IUD
Copper IUD
How it works
Releases a small amount of progestogen locally
Hormone-free; copper prevents pregnancy
Lasts
Around 5–8 years, depending on type
Up to around 10 years
Effect on periods
Often lighter, sometimes stops periods
May be heavier or crampier, especially early on
Hormones
Yes (low-dose, mostly local)
None
Emergency option
No
Yes, within 5 days of unprotected sex
Many people who want lighter periods lean towards a hormonal IUD, while those who prefer to avoid hormones choose copper. There’s no single right answer — we’ll talk through your priorities and health history at your telehealth assessment and help you decide.

How It Works & What It Costs
We keep the process clear and predictable. Your assessment is free, and the in-clinic fees are set out up front with their Medicare rebates — so you always know what to expect before anything goes ahead.

The IUD device is separate. The device itself is obtained on a prescription from a pharmacy. Hormonal IUDs are PBS-subsidised, so the cost is usually small; copper IUDs vary. We’ll explain the full details clearly at your assessment, so there are no surprises. If cost is a concern, talk to us — we’d rather help you find a way forward than have it stand in the way.
🩺 Insertion
The Insertion Appointment, Removal & Aftercare
Having an IUD fitted is a short procedure, usually taking only a few minutes once you’re ready. The clinician uses a speculum (as in a cervical screening test) and gently passes the IUD through the cervix into the uterus, then trims the fine threads that let it be checked and removed later. Most people are in and out within a routine appointment.
It’s honest to say the fitting can be uncomfortable — many people feel cramping, similar to strong period pain, during and shortly after, though it usually settles quickly. We take this seriously: we won’t rush you, and there are pain-relief options to discuss beforehand, including simple pain relief taken ahead of time and, in some cases, local anaesthetic. Tell us your concerns when you book, and we’ll plan the appointment around your comfort.
Removal and replacement
Removing an IUD is quicker and generally more comfortable than having one fitted — the clinician locates the threads and gently withdraws the device, which takes moments. You can have an IUD removed whenever you choose, whether you’re done with it, want to try for a pregnancy, or are switching methods. If you’re replacing one that’s reaching the end of its life, we can usually remove the old device and fit a new one in the same appointment.
After your IUD is fitted
Some cramping and spotting in the days and weeks after insertion is normal, and settles as your body adjusts. With a hormonal IUD, bleeding patterns often change over the first few months before becoming lighter; with a copper IUD, periods may be heavier for a while. It’s worth learning to feel for the threads occasionally so you know the IUD is in place. Most people settle in without trouble.
Seek prompt medical care if, after an IUD fitting, you have severe or persistent abdominal or pelvic pain, a fever, unusually heavy bleeding, smelly or unusual discharge, pain during sex, or if you can’t feel the threads or can suddenly feel the hard part of the device — and seek care urgently if you think you might be pregnant. These are uncommon, but they should be checked without delay.

Yes. Our East Melbourne clinic offers IUD insertion, removal and replacement seven days a week, including weekends. Being open every day means you’re not waiting weeks for a fitting or trying to fit one into a narrow window. It also matters for the copper IUD used as emergency contraception, which is time-sensitive.
Your initial assessment is by telehealth and is free, bulk-billed for Medicare card holders. Insertion is then done over two in-clinic appointments: appointment one is an examination with swabs and testing for $99 (Medicare rebate $47), and appointment two is the insertion for $495 (Medicare rebate $188). The IUD device itself is obtained separately on a prescription; hormonal IUDs are PBS-subsidised. We explain everything up front so there are no surprises.
Yes. The first step is a telehealth phone assessment with a Specialist GP to confirm an IUD is right for you and help you choose between hormonal and copper. That consult is bulk-billed, so it is free for Medicare card holders. The in-clinic examination and insertion appointments that follow have their own fees with Medicare rebates.
Very — both hormonal and copper IUDs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, making them among the most reliable contraceptive options available. Because they work continuously once fitted, there’s nothing to remember day to day. They’re also fully reversible, with fertility returning quickly after removal.
A hormonal IUD releases a small amount of progestogen locally, lasts around five to eight years depending on type, and often makes periods lighter or stops them. A copper IUD is hormone-free, lasts up to around ten years, and can make periods heavier or crampier, especially at first — but it can also be used as emergency contraception. We’ll help you weigh up which suits your priorities and health.

Yes. IUDs are suitable for most people who want reliable, low-maintenance contraception, including those who have never been pregnant or had children. The clinician will do an assessment to confirm an IUD is appropriate for you, since there are a few situations where it isn’t suitable, and then talk you through the options.
Yes — a copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception when fitted within five days of unprotected sex, and it then continues as ongoing contraception. Because that five-day window doesn’t pause for weekends, being open seven days means we can offer this option when it’s actually needed. If you’re considering it, contact us as early as you can within the window.
Removal is quick and generally more comfortable than insertion — the clinician locates the threads and gently withdraws the device, which takes moments. You can have an IUD removed whenever you choose. If you’re replacing it, we can usually remove the old one and fit a new one in the same appointment.
It depends on the type. Hormonal IUDs last around five to eight years depending on which one is used, and copper IUDs last up to around ten years. You don’t have to keep it for the full duration — it can be removed at any time, and replaced with a new device, usually in a single appointment.
Start by booking the free telehealth assessment online or by calling 1300 222 365, seven days a week. Once an IUD is confirmed as right for you, we arrange the two in-clinic appointments at Suite 6c, Level 5, 182–184 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne, with weekday and weekend times available.
