🗓️ Overview

Penile Injection Therapy in East Melbourne, Seven Days a Week

For many men with erectile dysfunction, oral treatments work well — but not for everyone. When tablets haven’t helped, aren’t suitable, or aren’t wanted, penile injection therapy is one of the most effective alternatives available, and it works for a large majority of men who try it. At our East Melbourne clinic, a Specialist GP assesses you, establishes the right dose in a supervised first appointment, and teaches you to use it confidently at home. We offer this seven days a week, with the discretion and unhurried care a personal subject like this calls for.

It starts with a free, bulk-billed telehealth assessment: a Specialist GP talks through your situation and confirms the therapy suits you. Because the first dose is done in person — so it can be tailored safely to you — being open every day helps: you can book an in-clinic visit that fits your schedule rather than waiting weeks.

What’s involved

Care that fits around you. Because the therapy starts with an in-person appointment, being open seven days — weekends included — makes getting started genuinely easy, without a long wait or time off work. If you ever need a review or dose adjustment, there’s someone available every day.
💡 How It Works

How Penile Injection Therapy Works — And How Well

Penile injection therapy — also called intracavernosal injection therapy — involves injecting a small amount of medicine directly into the side of the penis using a very fine, short needle. The medicine relaxes the blood vessels in the erectile tissue, increasing blood flow and producing an erection, usually within about five to fifteen minutes. Unlike oral treatments, it acts directly on the erectile tissue rather than relying on the body’s nerve signals, which is why it can work even when tablets don’t. The erection typically lasts long enough for sex and then subsides.

Because the medicine works directly on the blood vessels, it doesn’t depend on arousal or on intact nerve pathways — so it’s often effective for men who’ve had little success with oral treatments, including after prostate surgery or with nerve-related causes. Clinical experience consistently shows high success rates. The fine needle is short and thin, and most men are surprised by how little they feel; the technique becomes second nature after a little practice.

Who it’s for

It’s often a good option if oral treatments haven’t worked well enough or you can’t take them; if your erectile dysfunction is related to nerve or blood-vessel issues, diabetes, or follows prostate surgery; or if you want a reliable, on-demand option that works when you need it. It isn’t right for everyone, which is exactly what the assessment is for — a Specialist GP will review your health, discuss the alternatives, and make sure injection therapy is a safe, sensible choice before you start.

💳 Cost

What It Costs

We keep the process clear and predictable. Your assessment is free, and the in-clinic fee is set out up front with its Medicare rebate — so you always know what to expect before anything goes ahead.

The medicine is separate. The injectable medicine is obtained on a prescription from a pharmacy and is priced separately. We’ll explain the full details clearly at your assessment. If cost is a concern, please raise it — we’d rather help you find a workable path than let it get in the way of effective treatment.
🩺 Your Appointment

Your First Appointment, Self-Injection & Safety

The first in-clinic appointment is the important one, and it’s done in person for good reason. After confirming the therapy suits you, the Specialist GP gives a carefully chosen starting dose under supervision, so your response can be observed and the dose adjusted to get it right — enough to be effective, without overshooting. This supervised first dose is how the treatment is made both effective and safe for you specifically. You’ll also begin learning the technique here, with expert guidance and no pressure.

Learning to self-inject

Understandably, the idea of injecting yourself can feel daunting at first — but almost everyone finds it far easier than expected. The needle is very fine and short, the injection goes into the side of the penis (not the top or the head), and the technique is simple once shown. Your clinician walks you through each step, watches you do it, and makes sure you’re comfortable and confident before you take it home. Within a session or two, most men are managing it easily on their own.

Safety and side effects

Used correctly, penile injection therapy has a strong safety record. The most common effects are mild: some men notice aching or discomfort in the penis, or minor bruising at the injection site — using the correct technique and rotating the site helps. Injecting too often or at too high a dose can, over time, contribute to scar tissue, which is one reason the dose is set carefully and use is guided. Your clinician will explain the limits on how often it should be used.

An erection that lasts more than four hours is a medical emergency. If an erection doesn’t subside within four hours, seek urgent medical care immediately — go to a hospital emergency department. A prolonged erection (priapism) needs prompt treatment to prevent lasting damage, and the sooner it’s treated the better. This is uncommon, especially once your dose is correctly set, but every man using injection therapy must know the four-hour rule and act on it without delay. Your clinician will make sure you understand exactly what to do before you ever use the treatment at home.

We set out all costs clearly before you commit, so there are no surprises.
Yes. The first step is a telehealth phone assessment with a Specialist GP to confirm penile injection therapy suits you and discuss the options. That consult is bulk-billed, so it’s free for Medicare card holders. The in-clinic first-dose and training visit that follows is $199 with an $87 Medicare rebate.
Often, yes. Most men are surprised by how little they feel. The needle is very fine and short, and the injection goes into the side of the penis, not the top or the head. Some men notice a brief sting or mild aching afterwards, but significant pain is uncommon, especially once you’re using the right technique. The clinician will show you exactly how to do it comfortably.
Because the starting dose needs to be tailored to you safely. In the first appointment, a Specialist GP gives a carefully chosen dose under supervision and observes your response, so it can be adjusted to be effective without overshooting. This is how the treatment is made both effective and safe for you specifically, and it’s why injection therapy is started in person rather than simply sent out.
Almost certainly, and more easily than you’d expect. Your clinician teaches you the technique step by step, watches you do it, and makes sure you’re confident before you take it home, with written guidance and ongoing support available. The injection is simple once shown, and within a session or two most men manage it comfortably on their own.
An erection lasting more than four hours is a medical emergency. If it doesn’t subside within four hours, seek urgent care immediately by going to a hospital emergency department — a prolonged erection (priapism) needs prompt treatment to prevent lasting damage, and earlier treatment means a better outcome. It’s uncommon once your dose is set correctly, but every man using injection therapy must know the four-hour rule and act on it without delay.
It’s a well-established treatment with a strong safety record when used correctly and with the dose set properly. Like any treatment it carries some risks — mainly mild discomfort or bruising, the small long-term risk of scar tissue with overuse, and the important but uncommon risk of a prolonged erection. Starting in the clinic with a supervised dose and proper training is what keeps it safe.
